Revised- draft personal podcast

I want to create series of job application podcasts which will focus on telling HR or anyone who’s interested in me about my past and something I’ve accomplished which makes me qualified for the position I am about to apply for.

Also, these podcasts will basically serve as the supplementary information on my written resume or autobiography on my blog. Considering the limited time that HR gives each applicant, these podcasts will remain short and focus primarily on one period or single incidence which might reflect my past experience or skills.

So,genre of this kind of podcast could be fairly broad – it could be travel podcast which highlights several places I’ve been to, it could be entertaining podcast which hightlights kinds of  things I’m interested doing and it could be educational podcast which hightlights professional skills or education I’ve learned and received.

Here are links of several podcasts that I thought might fit into the genre of the podcast I’m gonna do:

 travel podcast: http://www.podcastalley.com/podcast_details.php?pod_id=11498

sports podcast: http://www.podcastalley.com/podcast_details.php?pod_id=39640

educational: http://www.podcastalley.com/podcast_details.php?pod_id=16327

To make these podcasts professional, I’ve decided to follow some podcasting tips provided by the author of HTDE, Shel Holtz:

1 Forget about your concept and thinking about your audience.

Since my targeted audience will be mostly HR and head hunters, I tend to think that they will not only be interested in all those hard&cold data in my cv, but also little story or incident happened to me which might help them get to know my personalities and practical skills better. Also, some personal thoughts about the company or the industry I’m interested in working for might give HR different angle to measure if i’m the right guy they are looking for.

2 Drilling down another level based on your previous thinking.

In this step, I will think about how HRs or head hunters will likely want to consume my podcasts. I am assuming that they will consume my podcasts from my personal blogs, job-searching website and etc.

3 Designed a show that’s right for your audiences.

a My job application podcasts will mostly focus on some interesting things I’ve done, such as doing short films with my colleagues, and experience that I would like to share, such as my learning experience in my former university, harvard summer school and UW. (This might vary depending on types of jobs I will likely to apply for)

b I guess 2-3 minutes podcasts would be a desirable length for me – neither too short to express my stuff, nor to lenthy to bore my targeted audiences.

c Talking about frequency, I prefer to a weekly show

d For feedbacks, I would send a practice podcast to each of my friends who’s  HR to determine whether or or not the podcast  is effective.

Good concept Ziwen. Perhaps you should focus your podcast on projects you have worked on that signify your accomplishments and credibility in the industry you are applying for. I am suggesting this because putting your qualifications in an audible format may duplicate your efforts because the HR recruiter/head hunters already have a text copy of your CV.

Put yourself in the shoes of a HR recruiter/head hunter – would you listen to a CV rather than reading it? If so, why? Think about what will make your podcast catchy AND credible.

Hi Ziwen

With today’s economy, finding unconventional yet professional ways to market yourself is essential, so I think you’re on to something. I agree with Annie that you should address experiences from your projects/professional life apart from what’s on your resume; focus on skills and give anecdotal evidence of them like you would when answering a question in a job interview. While your travel is interesting, I would keep the information limited to your professional and academic experience because that’s what HR really cares about.

Ziwen, this is an interesting approach to personal branding! I think the length is very appropriate – weekly may be too often.

Still need a short summary/description that tells people what the podcast is about – this is part of your personal branding!
